John Gordon Gauld creates playful still life paintings referencing the tension
amongst the organic, manmade, and supernatural. His recent Zodiac Series takes inspiration from decorative zodiac panels salvaged from the SS Andrea Doria shipwreck, the book Harmonia Macrocosmica by Andreas Cellarius, and the writings of transcendentalist authors such as Emerson and Thoreau. Gauld’s compositions bask in the weight of history with allegorical
images alongside quotidian objects. Known for a precise and photorealistic style, Gauld paints his canvases with egg-based tempera. The closer one looks at his paintings the more alluring they become with their layers referencing renaissance tradition, literature, and astrology.
